Either the Forester or the Outback gets the thumbs up from me. Our outback (2000MY) has about 75k on it and I think has only gone to the shop once, besides maintainence. A much better compromise than the other small SUVlets (RAV4, CR-V, Escape) and finding a MTX usually isn't a problem.

The Volvo XC70 or a V70AWD is another good choice someone mentioned. More luxury, and more room, although obviously more expensive to maintain and repair.

Someone else mentioned the Audi Allroad, awesome car, in a lot of ways, but Audi reliability can be really patchy, if it were my money I would stear clear....
