Chuck, definitely get the Forester XT. The suckers pulls and you can easily put the STi sway bar on the rear for improved handling. I did on my Forester.

Plus the forester will beat the piss out of any other smaller SUv in terms of performance, gas mileage, handling, comfort and reliability. the Escape is a sad POS. typical cheap Ford. And GM's offerings in that segment are crappy too.

...and if you're really doing a lot of REAL skiing/snowboarding, you'll appreciate the turbo in the mountains as it will lose much less power at altitude than a n/a car will. I'd say go with the forester, or perhaps even a legacy wagon?

With the likelyhood that gas prices will continue to rise over the long term, consider a Volkswagon Jetta Wagon TDI. It won't be fast like what you want but it will deliver on the milage and hauling capacity. Plus, these cars depreciate very little should you have to sell it for some reason. These days, it's better to go for what you need and not what you want.

I've also been looking for one of these, but its hard to find them around town... they're always in and then back out of inventory.

With a $300 upsolute chip it bumps hp to 116 and torque to 195... and torque comes on full under 2k

Plus, it gets almost 50 mpg at 75mph and almost 60 when cruising at 55... amazing cars.

You'll have to get used to a FAR lower redline though, no more screaming through the gears

i think you are on the right track with the scooby. fills the utility segment nicely without being boring to drive.

TBH, the jetta wagon is a little on the heavy side for that engine. now the 4 dr. golf OTOH, very quick with that motor. torque is everywhere

the forester sounds like a good idea. i also support the Volvo XC70 idea especially if you have kids. you can pick up a low-mileage used one in the high 20s.
