Wheel hop also has a lot to do with the tire you are using.
Small diameter, smaller width, and non Z rated rubber (not as "sticky" ) produce significantly less wheel hop.
Also the suspension on your old couch was set up for cruising down the parkway sipping ice tea.
Any suspension setup for touring (not the US "Touring edition" cars either

) and handling by nature will wind up more because they are transferring a lot more road input back to the driver.
With that in mind the majority of the suspension modification we do to our car makes it worse.
Then again we didn't buy this car to be drag racers either.
