the "ladies night" is based on pure economics:
-the men will go where the women are
-given the choice, women (and men for that matter) are more likely to go somewhere popular when it is free versus having to pay for it
-so the more women a bar or club can get to attend the more men are likely to show up.

exactly.
of course, the bars and clubs do not mean to be discriminatory, but technically they are doing so. the reality is that no one cares (including me), and everyone wins- girls get in free, and guys get surrounded by women, on a night which would have otherwise been a sausage fest....
