You should notice that the can gets cold and lighter as the freon is sucked out. If the can stayed full the service valve may not have opened. It's best that you get the gauge to work, or test it on another car to see if it works.

Hey RyeLou,

How much did you end up paying to get your leak fixed? I just discovered my roommates 98 contour, which she just got, has a leak (somewhere directly beneath the low side valve by the sound of it) and was wondering if that's gonna be a lot to fix...

Might be the accumulator can, they rust out. Located against the radiator on driver's side.

Could be the condenser. On my SVT had to replace the condenser and the conderser on the 97 has a leak right now. I'll be off to the junk jard to pick up a used one for that car. I put a new one in the SVT. Both leaks were on drivers side not to far from the top.

If wanted my A/C to work all the time I'd have to recharge it every day. I'm not sure what needs to be replaced and I think I might have to flip it to a mechanic for this one...

I Figure a few people might benefit from this post as it is again A/C season!

Is 1 brand/ can of R-134 better than another? The reason I ask, I need to recharge my Tour. Targe has a can with a pressure gauge and hose (all 1 unit) for $21.99 on sale. It was sittign right next to the small R-134 plain-jane cans. I don't have access to a hose or gauge so I thought this would be a good alternative.

What are your thoughs?

They are all chemically identical. At the most there could be an insignificant difference in purity. If it is R-134A it is the right stuff.
