Well on Wednesday evening I installed my 65mm GT Mustang throttle body onto my SVT Contour. The installation was pretty easy with only a couple of mods needing to be done to the Mustang TB for it to work with the Contour setup.
First thing I did, which I actually completed the day before, was to clock the throttle shaft and cam through 180° so as to have the cam in the same orientation as that of the SVT's.
To do this you need to follow these steps:
First unscrew the TPS and see how the tab on the end of the shaft is orientated in the TB. Make a line on the TB in line with the tab(scratching the Aluminum with a screw driver, lightly works well). With the TPS off, keep you sticky fingers to yourself and don't screw around with the TPS, don't move the mechanism or you may put it in the wrong position for reassembly. To clock the shaft you unscrew the butterfly from the shaft 2 screws insode the TB bore) and then slide the butterfly out. Next pull the shaft out (remember it's position b4 you do). You will have to grind away some Aluminum from the dead stop on the TB. Take of 3mm from the edge (see my pics below). Then rotate the shaft 180° and slid back in. You'll have to get the spring on right and turn it through 360° in the opposite direction to get the preload on the spring. Then reinsert the butterfly. You will now see that the butterfly open ands closes like before BUT the cam for the throttle cable is upside-down like they have it in the Contour. Finally reinstall the TPS.
To install onto the manifold I bought a new gasket for the mustang TB and reused the Contour gasket also. At the top of Contour's gasket I used a little RTV to help seal it to the manifold as the GT TB doesn't press up against the arch like the Contour TB (see pic). This is due to the different setups that the Mustang have for the EGR ports.
The gasket off the Contour TB has to be trimmed ever so slightly around it's bore ID, and I also removed the bump (you will see what I mean when you do this mod) in the ID all together. The bracket on the throttle cam also need to be trimmed in one spot, and bent it another so as to clear the intake maifold in one place and act as a positive stop for the butterfly in another.
The last thing to do ist install the TB onto the manifold, using both gaskets, with the Mustang gasket against the Mustang TB and the Contour gasket against the manifold.
The bore of the manifold and the 65mm TB are pretty spot-on, no grinding is required to port match the two.
The last thing is to hook up the throttle cable, and you'll find that the lead knob on the end of the cable is slightly larger in diameter than hole in the throttle cam, but with a set up adjustable pliers it can be pushed into the hole.
The torque increas with this mod is AWESOME. Part throttle and up to 3/4 throttle is totally like night and day compared to the SVT throttle body. I love this mod, and for the money you can't beat it. I think you have to have good exhaust and intake mods though to really feel the benefit of this mod.
For those who like engine noises, the sucking and whistling with this TB is prolly 75% louder, sounds COOL!
Anyway, check out the pics and let me know if you have any questions that I may be able to answer.
My optimised intake!
In this pic you can see that the bracket to the right of the spring has been cut flat. This is to clear the upper intake manifold, BUT the diagonal looking brack it bent outward to stop the butterfly (by hitting the manifold) at a point where the butterfly is flat.
This shows the positive stop better.
In this pic you can see where the bracket to the right of the spring has been cut flat a little better.
Finally you can see where the tang on the throttle cam plate has to clear the TB casting, and thus the need to grind some of the casting on the "old" postive stop, off so the buterfly is unrestricted through its 90° of movement.I recommend this mod to all modded SVT owners. You WILL NOT be disappointed!
