Has anyone ever experienced a "scaling" effect on their tires such that it has caused very bad vibrations? I was told that my alignment was off. I am running 17" Bridgestones RE730s. If you were to look closely at the individual blocks on the inner side of the tire (but still on the tread) every other block would be high, then the next would be lower, then higher, then lower, etc. This has caused very bad vibrations at around 70mph+.

I have similar problem with my '97 Mondeo. 205/55/15 Nokian NRV tyres have the same pattern on the inside. Took her to the alignment shop. As I suspected, Toe-in was -1.5 mm when it should be 0. Adjusted to that. All other measurements were within tolerances (camber, caster and so on). At least the wear hasn't increased since the alignment.

My factory tires wore unevenly on the inside. When I got my new tires, I made sure to get an alignment and havent had the issues since.

Y2K Si FBP,
I have about 63K miles to date. This problem had shown up end of last summer. I have snows (for the winter) which do not show this feathering, but I did get the car re-aligned just after switching over to the snows. I got the service guys to print me out a copy of the settings prior to the realignment and it was off. I have no real reference to know that what I had was marginally bad, or really bad.
I have been pretty religious about rotating the tires.

I have been pretty religious about rotating the tires. feathering would be a toe problem...cupping of tires would be suspension (shocks, struts) since you have 63k miles on the car getting a new set of struts wouldn't hurt
