ok, i know there are 2 main companies for 98+ aftermarket shifters, steeda and B&M; i don't care about the cost, but about the quality, so don't take $ into consideration if you vote, just the quality/reliability of the shifter.

Which short throw shifter is better?
1. Steeda
2. B&M

thanks a lot if ya voted

and if anyone has any positive/negative comments about their experience w/ the shifter, feel free to post as well

first off, this exact topic has been hashed over many times. search, you will find many opinions. i will add my .02 b/c i recently bought one.

i have the steeda. i love it. i believe its a little taller than the B&M, but its longer on the bottom than the B&M so the throws are the same. also, with the extra height, you dont have to reach down as far as the B&M. lastly, i have heard of some B&Ms breaking, but i believe that was a problem with the older shifters and has since been fixed (not sure though).

the one thing about the steeda is since it is longer on the bottom than the stock shifter, or any of the other short shifters for that matter, you have to make a spacer to raise the shift tower a little so the bottom of the shifter doesnt hit the floor. there is a different plate needed for some 99s and all 2000s as they use a new shift tower. i got mine through a GB, and someone made some nice machined aluminum spacer plates. i have heard of someone using plexiglass though again, not positive.

i think the steeda is a great shifter. a big improvement over stock. cant speak from personal experiance with the B&M, so i guess take what i say with a grain of salt.

bottom line- i dont think you will be disappointed with either shifter. both are good units.

so does this make the steeda harder to install than the B&M?
i was under the impression that the install wouldn't be too simple, but i wouldn't have to take a ton of stuff apart and mess up the car too bad either.

no the install was very straight foreward and easy. i actually did it without instructions, in about 30-40 min. i also wrote up a how to afterwards.

basically when you unbolt the shift tower on the earlier style (almost all 98s, some 99s) it has a lower piece, which stays attached to the car, and an upper piece, that comes off with the shifter. the plate just goes in between them during reassembly.

install is no harder than the B&M, there is just one more piece.

edit: here is my how to pretty basic stuff

are you sure that was B&M?? I haven't heard of any problems with them. There was an OBX short shifter that broke repeatedly, but i thought the B&Ms were strong...

I have a B&M and love it... shifts aren't actually technically any shorter, they just feel that way, which is 99% of the battle.

i say buy both and have the best of both worlds.
cut down the steeda to match the height of the B&M use the B&M's reverse lockout slide thing.
do some re-enforcement welding on the steeda.
now you have a real short throw.

i love it
