I have a 1996 GL tour with the MTX transmission and Zetec Inline 4. Ever since after I had my timing belt replaced my performance has be so to speak.. down, and the car tends to run a little rough, moreso when I have the heater on, and a lot moreso when I run the A/C. When going at a set speed I will feel the car try to lurch forward as if Its trying to gain speed, but then stop right after the lurch. Ive noticed that it doesnt do it nearly as much when I have the heater/AC off, its the worst when I have the AC running. Ive also noticed that the car doesnt do it as often if im doing 35 and in 3rd gear, as opposed to 35 and 4th gear... I figured it had something to do with the fuel system, that the engine wasnt getting enough fuel, my gas mileage has been way up (so it seems). I can also feel the car get much more power once it hits a certain RPM in every gear. As well as Starting from First gear, if im not really easy on my start off's the front end of the car will rumble arround. It will amost feel like my tires are trying to loose traction. Ive posted messages about this in the past, and the problem hasnt really gotten any worse, im just baffled on this, This post is a little more in depth then my last ones... Any suggestions at all?

Sounds like they might not have got the timing right when they replaced the belt.

Did you have the cam timing checked. It sounds like one of the cams might be a tooth off. Thats where I would start. It will still run even with the cam timing off and the only way it will set the CEL on is if the cam with the sensor is the one that is off a tooth. Hope this gets you a step in the right direction. Let me know. L8R Scott

Alright, I think both of you might be right. Like I said, I started to knowtice it after my timing belt was replaced. If it is the cam timing this is good, because they (AutoTech) gave me a 10K miles/1 year warrenty on the repair job, so that means they would have to fix it for free

not if the gear was chipped before they changed it. all they would have to say is "it was like that".
i may be wrong, but i think your gonna get stuck with this one unfortunately.
time for ADJ. cam gears?
BTW do you have a 98+?
NM you dont, so you dont have VCT, so it cant be the VCT sensor.

hum, well, if they say it was like that, and my car didnt do it before the belt was replaced, that means they did it... Anyways, how much is it to replace a cam gear? or Fix the chip in it?

Hey Everyone,I have a 1998 Contour gl,Zetech,64,500 miles,ATX.Im new hear,So bear with me,My timming belt went out also,it broke.I had a garage do the work, they installed the belt,And the car seemed to be starving for fuel, like it was,ent getting enough, low on power,Then 500 miles later i noticed what looked like belt shaving,s comming out of the top belt cover,so i took it off an sure enough the timming belt was chewed all up an ready to break again,Took the car back,he said a pully was bad.He would not take any responsability about the matter,$350.00 burned up,So the fool i am, i let him tear into it again an,He said there were a couple pully,s bad,An one thing i even told him before he did the job was that it required a new adjusting tensioner pin installed along with a new tensioner spring from Ford.He said that was,ent needed,So he preseaded to install the second belt,an i told him to install the replacement timming belt pully kit,Everything in one kit from Ford.He said he installed everything an said the car was done,an the bill was $500.00,I drove the car home seemed to be low on power again.I put 100 miles on the car an it,s doing the same thing again,For some reason the car is chewing up timming belts left an right,an another thing is for sure this mechanic does, ent no how to work on this motor,an i,ve waisted $850.00 now.And the guy is not installing the tensioner spring retaining pin,or the new adjustment spring, say,s it,s not needed.First of all,Does anybody no if im intiteld to any compinsation on this matter,$850.00 is alot of money to install a timming belt,an it,s still in the same shape it was the first time i let him work on it,is there a law that would be in my favor,Secondly he is not installing it right to start with,Because your supposed to change the tensioner retaining pin an the tensioner adjustment spring,I guess it has something to do with keeping the motor in time,But that leaves me in a big fix,I am taking it to the Ford dealership now an letting them straighten it up,I am disabled, left leg amputation,or i would do it myself,That,s what i,ve did my whole life is automobile mechanic,s.Does anybody no what might be my problem,And is there a law against a mechanic doing a customer this way.Thank,s for any advise you,ens might give me,Sorry for the lenght of my question, but i did,ent no how else to ask you, ens, sorry. Jerry. :

you should ALWAYS replace the tensioner and the balancer when you replace the belt.

well, if you want the law involved, that sounds like wrongful business pratices. If he keeps installing it the same way, and you tell him hes doing it wrong and he isnt listning, and the belt keeps tearing up, and he keeps charging you, something is wrong, itsounds like hes milking you for all you are worth. The place I went (AutoTech) did awesome work, it took them about a week and a half, but I told them I was in no hurry. My belt seems to be good about 2500 Miles afterwards, ive checked up on it. They also gave me a 10,000 miles 1 year warrenty. So if anything is wrong with the timing belt or anythign related to that where they had to replace or tinker with, then I get it fixed for free. That guy who fixed your belt SHOULD have given you a warrenty, if he isnt, dont EVER go to him. This is because he knows he is installing that part improperly.
