It's a bearing that makes one expensive part move smoothly around another very expensive part. When the bearing gets dry, as it would if there is not enough oil, one expensive part wears out the other expensive part. Odds are good that the bearings between the piston connecting rods and the crankshaft are worn to a frazzle, which lets the connecting rod bounce and bang against the crankshaft. This is probably the knock that you are hearing. If the problem developed because of low oil (which is what it sounds like), you probably have a lot of wear on all of the moving parts in the engine. $$$$$
