Not sure if this has been covered before, but I figured I'd look at what improvements could be made to the stock 2.5L throttle body. The stock unit is pretty precise for a mass produced item but the fit & finish of the individual parts can be improved once taken apart. Areas I found for improvement are shown below:

1) The screw heads can be flattened and rounded to a smooth edge.

2) The screws length was trimmed so that they didn't hang out past the shaft and the shaft was filed flat on the half-round side.

2) The brass butterfly was thinned to about 1/2 it's original thickness.

This is totally free mod and although it's not real scientific, the butt-dyno tells me this was totally worth the 2 hours + 1 six pack to do it. A noticable improvement in the ability of the engine to gulp air. The secondary opening is more pronounced and the RPMs build quicker and quicker as the RPMs climb to red line. Tomorrow: Optimization Stage II. (I'm on vacation, and it beats the heck out of yard work! :D)

OK now I must try this homemade mod, can't believe I haven't thought about that before because I did that to my Mustang. Thanks for the reminder....

I think it's a good mod myself. Considering I too did it. wink

This is also a good time to match the mounting port on the upper manifold.

My 65mm TB (from a 98 GT) is on its way, for $65. That'll help! I may try smoothing that baby out when I get it. wink

The SVT TB can even get better results on this mod as they have another half of the butterfly bar on the front side that can be removed for better flow as well as the other things you mentioned. I've done this several times to other local Contours, all noticing high RPM freedom. After you know what you're doing, you can do it in under 3-4 beers (half hour to 45 mintues sipping).

So what do you use to flaten this out? I don't imagine you would use a file as that would cause a rough edge.

Yeah this sounds good. What tools are required, and could you elaborate a bit on this? Post it here or email me @ thecontourguy@aol.com Thanks! And keep the mods comin!
