I've had similar symptoms to many of you regarding fuel - running out of gas with 1/4 tank, and high rpm hesitation. I changed the in-line filter many times - symptoms returned. I removed the fuel pump and cleaned the filter disk - no luck. I finally removed the fuel pump, removed the fuel sender, and opened up the plastic pump cannister to expose the 'vertical' internal filter sock.

It was very dirty, and it was dirtiest at the bottom. This explains why we have empty tanks when they 1/4 full! I removed the filter by first removing the rubber fitting on the bottom of the pump and prying it off. I cleaned the filter with brake cleaner and a toothbrush. You can probably use anything you have on hand. I put it all back together, and car is working fine.

A word of caution, as the filter is vertical, and the inlet is on the bottom, most of the fuel flow will go through the bottom of the vertical sock. Clogging the bottom firs. If my symptoms return, I intend to remove the sock.

Marvin, you got any pics of this? or can you find a diagram and post how/where to disassemble this thing?

I need to do it, but I live 40 miles from the nearest dealership and don't want to get in there and need a part- long walk to town.

Do you need to replace any gaskets?

Sorry, I thought about taking pictures after I finished, but then it was too late. You can call me at 301-251-9230, and I can talk you through it. It's actually quite easy. It would be smart to replace the fuel pumps gasket, as mine was stretched.
