I have had this idea for a while but have never brought it up to "you, the informed population of similar car owners". I learned back in 2002 that the Jaguar X-Type would be sharing the 2.5 and mtx-75 derived from our rides...OK...and that its platform was similar in many ways...ok...and that it is ALL WHEEL DRIVE!!!! I know you can all see where im going with this but..?? Is it just me or can this actually be somewhat feasible of an idea?? Obviously there would be some obstacles like exhaust routing and the new rear suspension but come on!!! Everyone chime in with some thought and some ideas on this...Lets start some more dreams for our lint-lined pockets to fathom...

well, the only real hurdle that i have heard of is the rear suspension. i think that the shocks sit at a 45 degree angle. if you have the cash you can do anything though.

Since you must be independently wealthy to think of attempting such a swap a better option for AWD may be the rear suspension of the Escape/Tribute.
Either that or look over seas for the early AWD verson of the Mondeo Estate. There is even someone that did it already over there and added a turbo at the same time.
Either way I hope you are very wealthy and have access to a great fabrication shop!

It would probably be more cost effective to just buy a Jag.

Use my idea, by a Jag, and slap the Contour sheet metal over it. Best of both worlds, if you have the money.

You could split them right at the pinch welds and just swap floorboards! Think of it, an AWD Jaguar Contour. The insurance costs of the Jag with the resale of a Contour. I've thought of this, but mainly just because it would be intresting. Looking at what I drive the chances of it ever happening are about as high as winning the lottery. The best option would be to find an 4X4 version of the Escape/Tribute (or Jag but the Escape is cheaper), with the engine/trans combo that you want. You would need to mount the drivetrain to the Contour subframe, hopefully the transfer case will clear the mounts that the rack sits on. Also coming with it would be the Escape's wiring harness/computer (need it to control the 4WD). Who knows what kind of wiring mess you would have making it work with the Contour guage cluster. The ABS system might not work since the Escape parts were built for larger tires, thinking of that, the guages would probably read wrong too. Move the fuel tank, relocate the spare tire, and design and fabricate the rear suspension. Volia! 4X4 Contour.

or the insurance costs fo a tour (since it looks like one and an insurance agent prolly wouldnt knwo the difference.) and a resale like nothing else...because ntohing else was ever made quite like this one...
if only our cars and their derivatives (mazda6/jag xtype/ecape/focus/cougar) actually sat on real Frames, instead of subframes...i hate unibodies
it looks as if the days of cars with real frames are gone forever...

The Escape uses an electronic, full-time, single speed transfer case. The shifter is a selector knob on the dashboard. It functions as FWD in normal mode giving power to the rear when the fronts slip or "on" giving x-amount of power to the rear tires. I highly doubt its locked though so on-road use would still be ok.
As far as registration/insurance goes, it would probably depend on which state that the hybrid was registered in and if the state found out about the mods.
