As long as marques are used that inspire memories of those same "old muscle cars, the big, heavy, tire smokin' beasts of the 60s and 70s" such as the GTO and Falcon, the comparison is still valid. The M5/E55/S6 come from a different background of Autobahn blasters that also have a certain name recognition in that the people that would buy a M5, E55 or S6 would prefer to own an BMW, Mercedes or Audi over any American or Japanese performance coupe or sedan.

American and Japanses manufactures chase those buyers endlessly, and rarely catch them.
