i have a 95 contour gl and am pretty sure the water pump just went. it has 130k miles and is loosing coolant out from where the pump is(i think, it is dripping from right under it.)the car runs fine and doesnt overheat though...i just had the hoses checked and replaced a month ago. how much money/labor is involved in replacement? any ideas, suggestions or help is appreciated.

Yes it will cost about $550-$575. That includes a new water pump, coolant, pullys, timing belt and tensioner, and a new serpentine belt, plus labor. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

If your timing belt/tensioner and/or serp. belt are fine then I guess subtract some of the cost then, but if you havent had them replaced in a while then you should because your shop may not charge you labor because the old ones must come off anyways.

damn...that is a lot. especially since i dont have it... but i had the timing belt replaced about 20k ago, so i think that is ok. is there any way that i could do this myself or is it too involved? thanks for your help.

It's not too bad if you take your time and have the right tools, but it's about the same labor involved as changing the timing belt. Do it yourself and save $150-$200.

It could be the head gasket. Have the system pressure tested to vefiry exactly what's leaking before you spend unneeded money.

I'd aim at the w/p before I would aim at the head gasket. Keep driving it while its losing coolant and it will be the head gasket, or worse.

Its not a horrible job to change it yourself, but its not to easy either (done it twice). I followed what the Duratec guys did and am running a metal bladed GMB. No problems for the last 30K+.

Where did you get the metal bladed GMB?

I am still running stock from the factory, and did not replace it with the timing belt because I wanted to 'move up in the world' and the stealership only would do Ford parts when I had the belt done.

Did not push it then because I am not having any trouble... Yet...

$473.30, just had mine replaced on friday w/ metal blade on the pump. Also included in that price was new timing belt kit and crank pulley, serp belt and lots of nasty green replacement coolant, soon to be flushed....
