Thanks a lot for all the replies. I still dont know what I would do in the Air Force though. After you pick what you want to do do they train you pretty extensively? Also regaurding the college thing I could go if I wanted to but I think this would shape me better over all for the rest of my life.

1969-1973 I was a boomer (boom operator) on the KC-135 Stratotanker. Great job if you liked laying on your stomach. All I can tell you is that the "Service" (any of them) are nothing (benefit wise) like they were in the 70's. I would REALLY think it over.

If you have have good school work ethic go to college first. If not, go into the AF and get those skills. The best thing you'll get out of the AF is discipline.

The problem with America is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment
for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety
labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

After basic training you will go to technical school. What base you go to train and how long your training lasts depends on what your job is. You'll receive decent training there but it's mostly just familiarization stuff, the rest you will learn on the job when you get to your first duty station.
You can still do college while you're in. 75% or your tuition is paid so it's usually about $150 or so per class with the books.

.....its obvious, you are a boot ;-) Have fun. Originally posted by USMCSVT: Go for it. Military in general is a damn good experience. My wife is a Marine and I'll be leaving soon for boot camp for the Corps. Of course, I'd recommend the Corps, but do what you find you like the most or will give you the best opportunity.

for one the air force sucks. two the military sucks. they are right now laying off 16000 af people and i was fortunate enough to be one of em. the af is full of people that like to get other people into trouble. i have been to one base LANGLEY and i dont have one good thing to say about it. in the 2 years i have been in i have seen 7 people kicked out and their lives are now ruined by one individual. the medical stuff sux. i broke my heel snowboarding and it took 2 visits to the er and two separate x rays to figure out i had a broken foot. then when i called work and told my supervisor i had to walk back on crutches almost a mile and a half. my girlfriend was involved in a motorvehicle accident and it took her two visits to the er for them to find out she had 3 cracked vertibre. there is nothing you can do if a snco doesnt like you. chain of command is worthless because it is your word over someone elses. two in the ucmj your are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. i for 1 have not recieved any non judicial punishment nor been in any serious trouble. the af is for certain people. [censored] in general. i hate it and fully support the military. if you can join in as an officer they are some of the coolest people i have met in the service. oh and the f22 i will be working it and currently work the f15. if you fod out an engine.....drop a bolt in the intake so to speak..... you will be arrested until an investigation goes through that either you did not do it or two you have a court martial arranged....... plain an simple. if you do join go into administrative. DONT BE A PJ DONT BE A TAC P DONT BE A COMBAT CONTROLLER AND DONT BE SERE 98 percent failure rate. get the easiest job you can and retire with it because the military has enough stress just getting along with the people you work with..... now with the positive side.... training is all paid for and you are paid while trained. i have learned more in life being in the military than ever. i am more responsible, independant, will never go live with mom again, am self reliant, and dont have fear of never amounting to anything. i have recieved over 100,000 dollor worth of training and a 4 thousand dollor bonus since i have been in and come september 15 will be out of the military and dont have to pay a cent back. i have the world of opportunities out their for me. i am 20 years old and have an associates with an (upcoming) honorable discharge. tell me if devry university can [censored] with that????? no way. bing in the military sets you above the average person. you are held to a higher standard. you are responsible for peoples lives and be required to fullfill the mision. whatever your reason for joining join for yourself after all it is your life you could be giving for the best contry on earth. integrity first, service before self, excellence in all we do.....hoorah

WELL SAID>>> Everyone is going to have a different of his or her own time in the military. It is either for you or its not, Either way 4 years, once you are out of High school, honest it goes really really fast. You have had a chance to hear from some of us on here, the Marines will always say they are the best, however they generally are not the smartest of the services. And they will agree, not all of them are dumb but they are here for one reason, to stop bullets, and I am greatfull for them walking that line. The Navy is great for travel if you are single, It will kill a marriage really fast, the army ,, My dad was a COl in the Army if you read in my above post, well army stands for "Aint ready tobe a marine yet" A. R.M.Y Hahahahaha THe AF has the highest entery level score on the ASVAB, Armed Services Vocational Apttitude Battery Test, which means they are going to get the smarter of the services applicants generally. There is alot of bullcrap that goes on because you have a work force of young people who all have different personalities, yes some are just busy bodies, and pains in the ass's but the great thing is you only have to work with a person for a year to 2 years on average. Second As for the 16000 AF troops, its called Force Shapping, yes they are "kicking out" that many but in over a year from the time they sadi this is going to happen, ONly just under 1000 to a little over 1000 have actually been asked to leave, and discharged. It all has to do with alot of things, computers are making alot more jobs unecessary, so alot of carrer fields are going away, and it sucke really. Let me give you this too, A good friend came in got his training, served for 7 years decided to get out at this 8 year mark, left on a friday and came back on monday as a civilian doing the same job in the same office just not as military making 20K more a year, In other words the miltiary is subbing out alot of its jobs to DOD personal. So Just come in and do your 4 years see some things , learn how to deal with people, and you will learn trust me on that, get your training,Or if you make it a carrer 20 years which goes by really fast hell you will still be very young getting out and retiring 38-40 years old. Basiclly your moms and dads ages prob. Picture being them and knowing yes you will prob get another job after your 20 years but them at there ages not having to worry cause they are bringing in 2000 -4600 a month for the rest of there lives from the military. You cant beet that.. Not having to worry and having your madical and dental covered . Life is good. Or you cango and then get a civilian job making alot more money than you will if you just go to college and then grad then get a job. I have so many friends that went to college and are as lost as they were when they went into college, just they have alittle paper that says degree, but they have no idea about the real world and have no experiences yet. In the AF I got a degree, got training, which in my jib doesn't do [censored] for me on the outside, unfortunatly, Presidential Honor Guard.. Not wise in the longrun, What can I do on the outside, go and be an escort, or model.. Thats what they do look pretty in ceremonies, yup really cool, I worked at the cool places and met really important people and presidents but that ain't crap.. Alot of my friends are stewards on AF ONe but the point is like someone else said, You get time to grow up, get paid to learn , get training , get to move out of home, do something different, meet new people, cause trustme the ones you left back home will still be there when you take leave and they will still be doing the same ol [censored] as when you left. Its really sad..you will see,. It opens up a world of possibilities. There are alot of bad things to deal with to. Deplyments, depends on your job, remote to Korea, you can be gone for a year, it sucks but you will get through it, and other TDY's to like Iraq adn other places...you will get through those too., And just think how many of the people you know ever ever will go anywhere like that. My wifes story is this came in right out of Highschool, getss training, starts her job goes through the ranks, gets to go to college parttime, decides after her degree I want to be an officer then she is a E-5 Staff SGT applys to Officer taining, goes away to training comes back and is getting Lt pay and prior Enlisted pay which is ALOT>>>>> She goes to Helicopter trainign to pilot choppers... Fly's gets out at her 23 year mark gets a civilian job flying news choppers or med flight for 100K a year..Not a bad life and she got all her training paid for and draws a military retirement check evermonth of over 3K for retiring as a Major or Lt COl.... We have 2 kids we have been married for 6 years, the kids are 3yrs and 9 months, she is gone right now I got out of the AF cause I screwed up my back, she stayed in, sure its killing her to be gone over to Qutar right now, but she is dealing with it, she will be home in 2 weeks, How do you think she felt leaving a baby at home, But its in the sacrifice for you and me to be able to chat on these computers today, it is really for freedom, cause if we were not fighting to bring it else where we would have non stop SEPT 11ths on our heaeds every day. I could go on and on but I think you get the idea..
