Focer, I think he's just trying to avoid getting fuel sprayed at his face when he disconnects the lines, as well as saving a bit of fuel (specially with today's gas prices) and if you're mocking putting a towel underneath it.. umm it has to be cleaned up somehow..

I've used Puralator fuel filters with no problems. I believe they have them at Advanced Auto Parts and Pepboys. Pulling the fuel pump's fuse and running the car should not starve the fuel pump as it has no power and isn't trying to move fuel. This is how I, as well as many others, remove the pressure from the line before changing the filter.

when you start a car with the fuel pump power off you are not starving the fuel pump as it is not working.... its just like removing the fuse or relieving the pressure by hitting the schrader valve...

What's a good tip to catch the gas that goes everywhere when you disconnect the fuel filter? I did much of the above, but still found gas in the lines, I used paper towels and then guiltily threw the whole, still slightly damp mess in the dumpster, not too cool for the garbage man : (

I realize this, but I was responding to the description below.

Start your car then pull the fuse?????????

I just used a regular big ol' shop towel, formerly a shower towel. Just hose it down once it's done soaking up the gas, then once u've soaked it and let it dry, run it through the wash.

I've never had more then a few ounces come out of the line and I don't depressurize it either.
As for the filter itself, I just buy a Purolator filter at Advance. No sense paying twice as much for the same thing at the dealer.

I don't depressurize either, and I don't have fuel spraying all over the place. Just put the end caps from the new filter on the old filter to keep the gas from spilling out. I have a 99SE, if that makes any difference.

I have a choice at my local O'Reilly's, Wix or Motorcraft?

Motorcraft would be my first choice of those two, but there is nothing wrong with Wix. Either one would be fine.
I also don't bother to relieve the pressure before changing the filter on my car, but the easiest way if you should feel the need is to find the tap on the fuel rail for hooking up a fuel pressure testing gauge. It has a Schreider valve, like a tire valve stem, that you can depress to relieve pressure.
