My clutch is shuddering a bit and I think it is nearing its day. I want to upgrade, the idea of using OEM has never set well with me, but it seems like using an aftermarket unit is a roll of the dice. People say they bite hard, but shudder quite a bit. What I'm looking for is a clutch that can be daily driven, pounded on occaisionally, yet remain smooth and shudder free (keeping my trans in one piece would be nice too). Is there such a clutch on the market? I searched the forums and didn't really find a good answer to this question. Lastly, for those of you who had your clutch installed by a mechanic, what did you pay? Mechanics around here are telling me 900-1100 with parts included in that figure. Thanks

Well I can tell you, don't get a spec if you don't want the annoyances.

I have to agree with Splice here....there is shutter, and it can get grippy somehtimes....and theres also idle clutch chatter....But all thoese things i can live with, cause IMO its a good clutch.
But Id reconmend SACHS or Centerforce clutch.
900 to 1100 (for parts and labor) sounds about right...but im sure you could find it a little cheaper.

I have a spec stage 1 with a lightened spec flywheel. I did not, and do not have any problems with mine. I do get gear roll over noise but that is because i got the lightened flywheel. IMO the spec is a get clutch as long as it is installed correctly. It has great grip, but is just as driveable as the stock clutch.

Is the Sachs clutch just an OEM replacement that costs a bit less or is it any stronger in any particular dimension? For those of you who had clutches installed, were you able to get a warranty with aftermarket clutch units? I know a lot of mechanics refuse to warranty their work unless they use their parts. Lastly, anybody tried installing one of these things in their garage? If so was it worth it...

If you are looking at Sachs, get the SVT stocker. It's a sachs with a very good friction material and pressure plate - plus it's only 280 shipped from Bill Jenkins for the kit!
I did mine in the garage - challenging but not technically difficult. Lots of stuff to remove, lot's of things that require more than one person - but doable in a weekend if eveything goes smoothly. (Mine didn't - took 10 days at 2 hours per day) In NY I'd say your biggest trouble will be fighting frozen/rusted bolts - so you'd want access to a torch and some air tools. I spent like 2 hours just getting the shift rod undone, and another 3 hours drilling out a rounded tranny bolt.

Very good advice.
If you are at the stock power level or close (180 wheels) the SVT setup is hard to beat.
Great price and has a better clutch lining and stronger PP verses stock replacement parts.
DO NOT let the shop pick out the clutch kit for you!!!
Bring them the entire kit of YOUR choosing!!! (kit = Disc, PP, and T/O bearing)

I haven't installed it yet. When you say idle chatter, how much and how loud?
