I got 2 HDs, C is 34.53 GB and D, which is called for system_sav is 2.72 GB. Can I just configure D as "master" and C as a "slave"?

No you don't. You have two partitions on the old HD - makes the OS think there are really two drives present. Likely set up that way by HP/Compaq/other HP reseller that the PC was purchased from OEM. Gf's PC is like that. It is done so they don't have to send full CDs of software, just their little BS restore disk. The stuff on the D: partition is the full backup data.

Are you sure you will be able to install your OS on the new disk with a setup such as that? I hear it is a real PIA (or not possible, but I forget). What do you have as far as software disks for installing everything anew on the replacement HD.

When you put the new one in, just format it like one big drive and you'll never see drive D again.

Yup, it's Compaq. As far as the OS software goes I can't recall/find anything from 'em right now, but proly it's still around.

So, Comp Wizzard CEGers - put in humane language - should I just buy a new internal HD, install it and be sure that there's a proper OS software available?

Well you need a new hard drive anyway. I doubt you have the Windows installation disks, so you'd have to either download or get windows from a friend... OR configure your old hard thing as a slave and the new one as a master, and then go through a custom boot disk (www.bootdisk.com) and then get to your old system_sav partition to get to setup.
Ugh. Just get windows on cd to make it real easy. The installation should be a snap.

Go internal on the HD. The only real use for external drives is for data transport. Besides that, using USB 2 or Firewire for a HD will result in a processor hit and the loss of the DMA capabilities of the onboard drive controllers.

If you decide to try to recover data on the old drive, make sure that you connect it to the middle connector on the drive cable and set it to slave. The master always goes on the end connector.

Are you a student? You can get an upgrade copy of Win XP Pro for less than $90 from www.newegg.com if you qualify for the academic version. All you need is an old Windows disk (from an upgrade eligible version - I used my old 98SE disk) from anyone. The only difference between that version and the non-academic version is the price.

The install program for XP asks you to insert the disk during an early step in the process, just to check. As long as you can do that, you'll have a fresh version of M$'s latest OS on your new disk. And you will NEVER need the old OS disk again.

I have to say, I hate Microsoft but I am quite pleased with Win XP Pro. Very stable, MS finally figured out how to allow most programs to install without a reboot (unless it's hardware related), System Restore is a godsend (I just used it last night to squash a gremlin), and they finally got Memory Management right.

On the down side, it is quite bloated: you need at least 128 MB of RAM (should have 256 in reality) and a couple of gigs of HD space. Not that HD space is hard to come by now. But if you don't have hardware that can support that, I'd suggest finding a friend's Windows 98 disk and install that.
