I recently purchased a 99 SE Sport and have found that when I buy something for it such as alternator, o2 sensors etc I have to buy for a 98. Has anyone heard of this? Leftover engines? Any major differences between the 98 and 99? The 99 alternator (which doesn't fit the 98) sure seems "beefier".
Any thought?

I don't know if this helps, but I looked at a Contour that was advertised as a 98, when in fact it was built and registered in 97, so it was really a 97.

i know for a fact that the 98 and 99 years are very borderline. i have had this problem, all that i have to say is if you go to get parts, BRING YOUR VIN!!!!. those id10ts at most part stores will be so confused that they will give you 95 parts. if you dont have your vin bring the part... my 99 took at 98 o2 for high side and a 99 for a low.......

Ford manufactured the cars the summer/fall of the year before they sold them, and sold in the winter of that year. Many autos are done this way. Mine was built 10/97, and some of the '95 Contours are rapidly approaching their 10th anniversary this fall.

For example, take a look at how many '05 model vehicles you will see out this summer and fall.

My 99 was built in june 99 but shares the decontenting and some parts of the 2000. Most cars are built before the model year. Most 2005's will go on sale in September or so of 2005.

So model year does not necessarily equal built year.

Exactly. Build date only roughly relates to model year. My '98 SVT was built in April of '97. Its definitely a '98

For perhaps the 1000th time, 1998 model Contours had an early release date of spring 1997.

Build date is not the model year, haven't you known that since forever ago, model years are usually introduced in the previous fall, summer, o even spring?

If you think this is unusual, then look at how many 2005 cars are on sale right now! Spring introductions are more common then ever, and by September, all the cars being made will be 2005's. So don't think that a 1997 build date means it's a 1997 car.

I have a 98 built 07/97 and my serpentine replacement belt was listed for 97. I believe parts mass confusion based years models and plants Oh Heck it's all Mr. Nasser's fault!!!!
