Spoken exactly like someone who's never been there.

And, 1/3 of your kids' peers are not overweight because of Disney, it's because their parents won't do anything to get them out of the house.

ANY company markets their wares anyway they can- movie tie-ins, lucrative licensing deals, etc. Hell, do you not watch ANY form of TV for fear that your kids will be brainwashed into thinking they have to have EVERYTHING on the planet? Unless you make EVERYTHING that you own, be it your house, your car, your food, your clothing, the computer that you are working on from home, you've BOUGHT something from someone who was most likely advertising. Sheesh. Time to turn it down a notch... you're going to wind up hurting your kids more than helping them.

I have no problem with marketing. What I have a problem with is companies that target their marketing to kids 12 and under.

As far as the comparing the costs of going to Disney World and going to the local amusement/water park, there is no comparison. I can drive my my family to the local water park on a Saturday and spend all day for less than 50 bucks. I don't have to take time off from work. I don't have to book reservations or plane flights.

I know families that have dropped three grand on a Disney vacation and I don't think that's at all unusual. For that kind of money, I could and would take my kids to Europe instead (just not EuroDisney).

Someone explain to me why DisneyWorld is such a mystical near-religious experience that one's kids will be forever warped unless they make the pilgimmage?

Odd.. the amusement park I go to around here: $43.99 a day. Disney world: $192 for a four day pass. That's around $4 more a day for admission. Then you have hotel.. you can get some REAL cheap hotels in kissimmee, FL. I've seen some for $30 a night.. nice ones for $60. That's cheaper than you can get around our local amusement park (costs ~$75 a night for the basic ones). Then food.. the amusement park food costs $15-$20 for something worse than high school cafeteria food. Disney's is the same for basic food, more for the expensive stuff (but that's not necessary). For the same amount of time, you're spending the same or more at local parks.

Of course they're marketing all sorts of crap to your kids. Ya know what? If that marketing is more powerful than your influence over them, you're a crappy parent. When I went to Disney as a kid, we DROVE, stayed in a budget hotel, made most of our own meals, and I got one souvenier (a hat). Odd.. I still loved it. Fancy that.

Bingo.

You'd be surprised how many bankruptcy candidates - parents who can't pay their legitimate bills - feel obligated to take their kids to Disney World. What could be a valuable lesson in belt-tightening to the whole family instead becomes a lesson in the importance of instant gratefication.

How many parents do you have lumped in there who are willing to spend so much money on a place they went to when they were younger, loved it, and are willing to do what it takes to let their kids have the same adventure?

Any and every cartoon that is on TV has a marketing campaign launched towards every kid that can understand what the flashing lights, pictures, and sounds on TV are. Hell, Sesame Street, one of the greatest advocates for children around, has a huge marketing campaign. But I'm sure Jim Henson and CTVN are nothing but evil masterminds determined to warp your kids' sense of self, too, right? Please.

If your kids have a feeling that they are somehow missing something if they don't have the latest toy, it's not marketing's fault, it's yours as a parent for not instilling the correct sense of self in your child. It's not a problem to let your kids watch TV, and maybe even see a Disney movie on occasion (when the movies aren't complete crap to begin with), just teach them so the "evil media" doesn't get a chance to.

I just hope your feeling of superiority keeps you warm. Frankly, when I've got kids, the time, and the money to take my kids to Disney (I'm trying to go with my girlfriend, actually, and yes, it's pricey), the Florida sun will keep us warm. And it has nothing to do with them feeling like it's this rite of passage or a requirement as a kid. It's because it's a fun place to go. The rides are a blast, the technology is unbelieveable, and the settings of the different resorts are great.

Not THAT expensive, I'm planning a trip down there too (when my car stops dying). Its not the ice cream that's expensive, its the toppings. Personally, I like plain old chocolate ice cream. Mmm, ice cream. Its hot out, I want some ice cream now.

Wow, you're going to an amusement park. How interesting. And I'll make sure to pray for you since those amusement parks are so dangerous. I would be afraid to take kids there they are so bad. Next week, maybe I'll post my whole history of amusement parks I've attended. I guess people on this forum find it interesting.

Way to be a complete a$$hole...good job. Probably just angry because mommy and daddy never took you to any amusement parks and kept you locked in the closet for so many years...too bad they decided to let you out.

Yes, linabby's boyfriend, I succeeded in my goal. Yes, mommy let me out and I went and bought a contour and never went to disney world and I'm very very angry. I think I'm gonna throw bananas at the walls now.
