correction-the separation of church and state does not apply here. the "institution" of marriage is both a religous and a legal "institution" with separate rules for each.

this is all just a battle of opinions. Its the publicly elected politicians and law makers that are either for or against this and they take sides based on how many votes that they think that they may gain or loose based upon their decision.
Its all a bunch of politics, therefore its all a bunch of BS.
I'm happy to see that MA has decided to take its head out of its azz.
If any two people choose to be married they should be allowed to be married.

Agreed. Unfortunately, both NH and CT refuse to recognize these MA marriages (although RI will recognize them). Pity the intolerance.
I am Catholic and this for a long time was tearing at me (originally supporting civil union but not marriage) ... a few friends and the original CEG thread on this forced me to relook my perspective. Since then I have supported it in the state and am glad MA is now recognizing and issuing licenses.
The Boston Globe clearly supports it, almost their entire front page was of the events. Ironically, the Worcester Telegram and Gazette had a different stance, a few days ago putting full page news on our new Bishop and only a quarter of the front page today on the gay marriages. I am now beginning to recognize the media tendencies all around

I move to change the name of Massachusetts to Homochusetts.
And to the people lamenting the intolerance. [censored] you. I'm sick of being required to "tolerate" every freak of nature that comes down the pike. Next thing you know we'll have to "tolerate" pedophiles, necrophiles and zoophiles as "life choices".

Why the he!! not - doesn't offend me or make my marriage mean anything less.
If it makes your marriage feel less special or not as good, you need to look into your issues rather than this. If 2 people want to marry and spend the rest of their lives loving and caring for each other amen to that.
Heck, heterosexuals don't get it right 50% of the time either, so what about this makes it less of an institution.
Good for Mass. recognizing that every person should have the same rights.

I would understand the stance by some married people that gay marriage will lessen their marriages if gay people intended this a lark or a whim.
Thr truth is that we are looking at marriage at least as seriously as straight people look at it. We are looking at marriage as a commitment to each other for the rest of our lives, not a political statement or social convenience.
Sorry, but I get a little riled up when people seem to think two men making a lifetime commitment to each other is somehow less than when a man and a woman do it.

No, marriage is a religious ceremony adopted by the government to represent civil unions.
The civil union part died, and marriage is all that was left.

The difference being in the three groups you mentioned here, there is a clear victim- one who cannot neither accept or reject the advances of the other party involved. You're also dealing with groups of people who are usually deranged in one way, shape, or form. There is strong obsession and mental illness associated. And, in some ways, it IS a "life choice." Being gay is NOT a choice, no matter how you try to argue that.
I'm willing to bet that you've seen (and probably gotten off to) two women going at it and not complained once. If not, you're missing something great. Bear in mind, I don't find two men having sex repulsive, it's just not what I'm attracted to.
If you have two people (note the term PEOPLE, not animals, not inanimate objects!!!!) love each other, have been committed to each other, and want to get married, why the hell not?
Long story short, same sex marriage is NOT going to affect opposite sex marriage in any way, shape, or form. And if it does, as many have said, you've got bigger problems than what's being addressed here.

Well atleast you recognize that gay is due to nature and not choice, but a freak of nature I think not.
Homosexuality has been around (proven) along time and I would think since shortly after the begining of man.
It has appeared often in the animal world as well.
Infact it is increasinly showing up in the animal kingdom.
And nobody is telling you to tolerate, preach your prejudice all you want, just don't practice it.
