That spplies to us Contour owners too. Do you or I really need a 2.0 or 2.5 L engine in our cars ? The most I haul around is my golf clubs. My last car had a 1.2l engine and it was more than adequate for my needs.

If I had the choice of something fun with a 1.5 or 1.6 L engine, I'd go for something like that.

my rx7 has a 1.3l engine

Sure it does.

When is the last time we built a new refinery in the USA? Probably three, yes, three decades ago. However, refineries have been closing for a variety of reasons, costs, efficiency, EPA regulations, etc.

So oil companies close down refineries that cost too much to operate, and are offered by the market, a higher price for the commodity they produce.

They make more money.

I don't believe the oil companies set the price of fuel. The only thing they control, just like OPEC is production. They really can't even control the gasoline basic formula as the EPA has a couple of dozen different formuations throughout the USA.

Want stable gas prices? One way to get there is to have one or two summer and a like number of winter gas formulas, so the refineries don't have to run different batches of fuel for different areas. You could volunteer to host a refinery in your neighborhood. I imagine most places don't want a refinery, so no new refineries get built. I read about 6 months ago that we now have to import finished gasoline since we cannot refine enough fuel at times in the US.

Profit is not illegal, nor immoral. Now you can make a profit in legal or illegal ways.

I know the little guy seems to suffer, but that is going to happen. You can make the little guy rich by taking away from the poor. You have to teach the little guy how to become rich himself.

It IS illegal and immoral to liberals. Success is wrong. Mediocrity is the only way to true equality.

Come on Pat, you're more intelligent than to really believe that, aren't you ?

I've heard it said by many liberals. Granted they were college students who haven't been into the real world but some people truly believe that success is wrong. And according to Kurt Vonnegut Jr. mediocrity IS the only way to true equality.

Read up on 'zone pricing' - there are two Exxon stations within a mile of each other here. One is charging $1.999/gal, and the other $2.119/gal. I asked the $2.119 owner why he ALWAYS charges $0.10/gal more than his neighbor and it's because he's in a different price zone. Exxon charges him more for the supplied fuel. Exxon (all of the oil co's actually) definitely has direct control of the selling price of fuel. They base the price of supplied fuel on a variety of factors, including amuont of local competition, local demand, local marketing charges, and local income levels. Giving them a direct hand in the local selling price of fuel.

Oh yeah, the SAME EXACT truck delivers fuel to the two stations.

That sounds more like something the local distributor is doing rather than the refiner.
