No it's not.
Please educate yourself on worldwide fuel consumption and basic economic principles before making such wide sweeping judgements.

That really is a stupid idea. Not only does it demonstrate no knowledge of economic principles, but how in the hell would you ever get that to work? Have the gas attendant sit there changing the rate per each car that pulled in? That's just stupid. How about the people who eat more bread? Should they have to pay more per loaf? Your idiocy astounds me. .... but I will agree that I hate people who drive SUVs for no purpose. I don't think they are allowed to complain about gas prices, its their own dumb@ss fault for buying an SUV. I have to pay more for premium gas, but I don't sit here b!tching about it because it was my choice.

I've been yelling it at the top of my lungs for years: the Chinese are going to be the US's biggest economic threat bar none. Their exploding economy is going to rocket up the demand for oil and refined petroleum products like nothing the world market has EVER seen.
You can blame OPEC, the latest politican du jour, dumbass and completely idiotic consipracy theories over political/private enterprice price fixing, etc., etc....
The FACT stands that basic Keynsian supply and demand on a global level is what is behind the continuning rise in oil prices. The Chinese have over 5 TIMES the population of the US. A burgeoning middle-class hungry for personal transportation and other luxury items is going to push things to the breaking point that much faster and I'm not even considering India in this argument, either.
I'm also not going into the issue that the US hasn't built a refinery in over 2 decades, IIRC. Imported refined petroleum will continue to rise in cost as price controls will be outside our ability to sway or control, for the most part...

No, actually we all understood exactly what you said, which is why they have rightfully called you stupid; I would rather call you socialist, borderline communist, but thats just me. ??From Each According to His Ability. To Each According to His Need,? hasn't worked yet, and I don't see it ever working. But if you think that it would, you can always move to California as they are already 95% there. (can we say $4/gal gas!)

Getting SUV drivers to pay more per gallon for gas would simply never happen. However they should pay more in taxes as they put more strain on the road network. China's economy is pretty abusrd as of late. But there are massive problems with their banking structure, similar to what happened with Japan. Their electrical grid isn't doing all that well either, so I wouldn't be suprised to see either one of these put a BIG dent in their economic growth in the next few years. Quote:

Yup, enviromental regulations. It's still generally cheaper to have it shipped in refined from a country that isn't as eco-friendly than to build a refinery here that would be tree-hugger approved.

Basic economic principles.
What basic economic principle is this?
I'm no economist, but all things being equal, if demand decreases & supply remains the same, the price of oil and gasoline would trend LOWER, not higher. THAT is THE basic economic principle. Didn't you ever wonder why gasoline prices DECREASE after the summer driving season ends.
Face it, Everyone with a sensible car pays more for gasoline becuase of al the morons driving gas guzzling SUV's.
And while I think that basic economic laws might explain record PRICES for gasoline, they don't really explain the record PROFITS of the oil companies.

That spplies to us Contour owners too. Do you or I really need a 2.0 or 2.5 L engine in our cars ? The most I haul around is my golf clubs. My last car had a 1.2l engine and it was more than adequate for my needs.
If I had the choice of something fun with a 1.5 or 1.6 L engine, I'd go for something like that.
