You want SUVs to pay more for gas. In your example:

Ford Contour - 3000/27 = 111.1 gallons of gas
Toyota Prius - 3000/55 = 54.5 gallons of gas
@$2/gallon
Ford Explorer owner spent $395
Ford Contour owner spent $222
Toytoa Prius owner spent $109
Seems to me like they pay plenty more for gas.
More Gallons of Gas == More Revenue == More Profit. Why the hell would gas companies want to change that at all?
If people were enticed into buying cars with better mileage, gas companies would just increase the price to keep profit levels up.
