bad springs in what respect

springs are made of metal

metal rusts and corrodes after road salts and other corrosive material gets into contact with the springs and so the physical spring wears away

I would think that that wearing away will change the spring rate.

any thoughts

Sure, if rust eats away enough material, the spring rate will change.

The other way springs can fail is via fatigue stress. Think about bending a piece of wire. You can only do it so many times before it breaks. Different metals have differing elastic properties, and suspension springs should be very good at deforming and reforming over and over without any trouble. But the metallurgy has to be right.

Just purchased replacement rear springs for my 95 LX 2.5L Found a back spring broke. Purchased TRW springs from Advance auto parts for 46 dollars for the pair - even had the insulators on them!

I just poseted a question on Suspension forums.

Whenever I have a passenger in the back seat I have rubbing when going on small bumps/hills.

bad springs ???

Springs don't normally "wear" out. I could see that the ends of the coils may wear if there is no cover to protect it from contact with the strut, but this would likely not cause any significant problems. If the surfaces are kept fairly clean they should last a very long time. They may take set over time. This is typically caused by high temperatures (ones you are not likely to impart) and by heavy or over loads. The set does not affect the spring rate, only the ride height.

If you use used springs, check closely for rust pits, cracks, and/or nicks. Springs will begin to initiate a crack where there are pits and nicks. The time to failure depends upon how often the springs are cycled and how much load is applied.
