i've already blown a motor, mind you it was because of a defective ford part, but I don't want to go down that road again.....
If you don't want to go down that road again, it seems to me the pan is a in expensive peace of mind. I don't mess with my oil systems, its the blood of the car. Always spend the extra dollars IMO.

my 3L sat for almost a year before i started her up i didnt do anything to the bottom end except change the oil pan and im on 4k+ miles. so i doubt its that you let it sit too long.
