I inspected the piece and it looks like the previous owner broke it and super-glued it back together. Hold the "outter" part of the boot down w/ a screwdriver tip and pull up on the "inner" part of the boot. Should slide right out.

Glad everything worked out. Getting the cables off the TB is a piece of cake...sorry you had such a rough time with it.
