I can't figure out how to get the throttle cable linkage (correct terminology??) off of the throttle body. It isn't connected by any screws or anything...

No, one just slides off the disk type fitting and the other is just wound around the shaft. Just open the TB plate and pull it out of the slot.

The cable with the black "hat" on it ... you just have to push it hard off of the TB part it's hooked onto. Put a rag around your hand and push hard --- watch you don't ram your knuckles on something when it does give though.

With no luck in getting that off, I decided just to put in the new screws on the butterfly plate and clean out all the carbon buildup. It seems that I have created more problems by doing all of this. My car revs and then almost dies and then revs again. It keeps doing this until it finally dies. And now it seems my brakes don't work. sheesh

Did you just say you put the new screws on the butterfly plate without actually removing the TB. If that is the case, that's why your car is not running right. Let us know exactly what you did that way we can tell you if you need to go buy a new TB

I partially removed it. It was just hanging on the cables. It was cake getting the plate out and working on it. I did find the problem. One of the hoses that connects to the top of the manifold broke. I think it eventually connects to the same thing that the brake fluid resevoir connects to. I inspected the piece and it looks like the previous owner broke it and super-glued it back together. I will probably have to do the same, as I cannot remove the boot from the tube (the boot is the portion that is broken in half). That thing is stuck on there insanely tight. I have no idea how this happened either...

I've had pretty good results with a large standard screwdriver. I push the screwdriver blade against the open end of that plastic hood, towards the engine, which usually pops it right off the shaft.
Anyone in the St. Louis area who wants to watch a UIM/LIM cleaning and TB optimization being done next week drop me a line.

Hold the "outter" part of the boot down w/ a screwdriver tip and pull up on the "inner" part of the boot. Should slide right out.
Glad everything worked out. Getting the cables off the TB is a piece of cake...sorry you had such a rough time with it.
