Unleaded fuel is like Non Fat milk there is still a little in it. 100 Octane and higher have much higher lead content than the "unleaded" 87,89,91,93 Octanes. Some even state that they are leaded fuel which you definately should not run on a vehicle with cats.

Huh?

Lead was an additive, not something that was removed like fat from whole milk. Even the trace amount of lead in fuel from common handling when oil companies still sold both types, is gone. No more additive, no more common handling, no more lead.

The last major oil company to sell leaded fuel that I can remember was Unical and that was well over 10 years ago, maybe even nearly 20 years ago. I do remember a small group of independent stations selling "Trick Gas" (there was a station in Hollywood) that continued to sell leaded fuel for a few more years, but that was uncommon. It was also a lot more expensive.

If there are still service stations selling leaded fuel, they would be very uncommon.

The station i get my 100 octain form specificly states (on the pump) for "Unleaded Vehiclas Only". And yes like some one else stated, lead was an additive.

Additives can be removed as easly as they are added.

Some one on these board works for a refinery.....and i believe he posted that there is no more lead in gas what so ever.

Okay my bad on the whole unleaded/leaded fuel thing. I was talkin with a guy at work about higher octane ratings and he had mentioned that higher octane fuels had higher lead content but that was when there were leaded fuels not now.

Running lower octane then the PCM is programmed for will significantly LOWER GAS MILEAGE!!!

So now you are getting less miles per tank. So much for saving that extra money because you now need to fill up more often.

Actually, my experience has been that my miles per gallon IMPROVES on 89 octane. Some of my highest miles between fill ups have been with 89. By the way, I average 24-26 mpg in mostly highway driving.

Was that a one tank occurance or tracking average mileage over a 1000 miles or more though verses 1000+ miles of the exact same driving style and type???

With lower octane fuel the SVT engine is running at a lower efficiency. (significant timing retard!)
Lower efficiency means less power & less mileage. It is as simple as that in layman's terms.

If you want me to figure out exact losses you'll have to wait for me to dig out my old text books.

My modified 2.5L averaged ~24mpg in mixed driving with my lead foot and redline almost every shift. Running 92 octane Amoco and normally with some type of octane booster.

Even the 3L is averaging about 21-22mpg so far and the large majority of that mileage was both winter (which lowers mpg) and testing (which KILLS mpg!)
