Ok, I'm not one to question a Hardcore Ceg'er, but...Does it really work that way? Can you mix fuel and get an "average octane"? I'm not saying you can't, but I am ignorant to this concept. Does this really work?

if you are filling up part way with 89 and the rest with 91 then maybe but not if you are alternating fill ups

When you go to a Shell or Mobil gas station, they have 3 storage tanks under ground for the gasoline. One contains regular, one mid grade, and one plus. When you go to a Sunoco, which (at least in my area) offers 4 or 5 different octane choices, there are only 2 underground tanks. One contains 87 octane, and the other contains the high test. When you choose something in the middle of those extremes, you get a fresh, proportionate blend out of the two tanks ! So, yes, octane can be "averaged"

Sell you car and buy a Geo then.  Running lower octane fuel will cause detonation. Yes the knock sensor catches most of it. Key word being MOST. Nothing is 100% Also light detonation is not caught. During very hot weather engine damage is possible (albeit not very likely) if you go WOT. Yes your performance will drop off noticeably. As will your timing curve and fuel mileage. 'nuff said If you have a 2000 model DO NOT even think about running low octane fuel. Mine detonated on cheap 91 octane the only time I was forced to run it. I couldn't imagine how bad it would have been if I had a chip or any real mods at the time.

Get rid of the SVT b4 you run cheap gas through it. I use 87 for my 5hp lawnmower......not for a well designed 2.5l engine.....common sense....stuff

Common sense would be to read the Owner's Manual, already quoted above.
It is the result of much engineering design and testing. If the engineers who designed the system had believed that a higher octane was mandatory, they would have specified that it as the only grade of fuel to be used.
Almost all Ford vehicles are designed to run just fine on regular pump grade fuel. There are only a few vehicles for which premium only is required and the Contour SVT certainly isn't one of them.

It really does suck that gas is expensive. But to be honest, I don't think it is that big of a deal to spend a few more dollars at the pump and get 93. i'm going to buy a beater for this winter anyways so i don't care!

How can you be so sure Steve, especially since you do not own a SVT Contour? The SVT supplement to my Contour manual states Premium Fuel Only, with a 91 octane stated as minimum. There is also a sticker on my fuel filler door that states it as well. I am also pretty certain under the fuel gauge it also states the same.

i cannot remember where exactly i read this but somewhere in the paperwork/manual for my svt i read that you should always run 91 as a minimum but if for some reason you did run 89 or 87 the computer would alter the timimg or something like that so as to prevent detonation
