IMO, yes, it needs to be taken apart for FULL effectiveness. I've done the spray-though, then pulled it all apart at 50K and it was still filthy. 7 cans of Berrymans filty.

More than anything, it just took some courage for me to take my UIM off. IIRC, no special tools were required (torque wrench can be "rented" from Autozone).
