Mine did this for awhile and I just new it was the range sensor going out on me, but come to find out all I needed was some plugs and wires. It actually would have been cheaper if it was the range sensor since it is only about 40 dollars I think.

A few questions first though...

When was the last time you changed the ATF?

What is the current condition of the ATF?

When was the last time you did a really good tune-up on the engine?

Reason I am bringing up the bits about the engine, is because it's overall health has a hugh impact on the wellness of your transmission. Since the CD4E is an electronic transaxle and the ECM dictates shift points and charactoristics based on inputs from the not only the transaxle itself, but the enigne as well, a healthy running engine is the key to a healthy anything else. Now, I'm not saying you don't have any tranny issues, but what I am saying is that a good general rule of thumb in diagnoiseing issues such as this is to look at the overall picture and not just one piece.

Hope to hear back from you and maybe we can get that CD4E back to proper operation again.
