I used to have a K&N in my stock Duratech airbox (drilled) and it seemed a little smoother and more responsive than the paper filter. The holes that I drilled in it made it sound better (it sounded even better after I removed the wierdly shaped tube that connected the airbox to the fender air inlet).
I am now using the base from an SVT airbox with a large opening universal K&N filter screwed down onto it and it has made a small improvement for me.
I think any air filter improvements will really show themselves once I can justify the cost and shop time to open up the exhaust a little bit.
