My SIG says it all! Although I have hit an indicated 154 before. And speeding is not stupid if you do it in Germany on an unrestricted part of the autobahn on sunday morning.

hunymobile 2ksvt Well I dunno know about U but at 150MPH and up I try not to concentrate too much on my EXACT speed. I mean I glanced down and seen my needle break 150 and then put my eyes exactly where they needed to be...on the road. Among other things, there are ALOT of animals in that state...animals/cars/high speeds = bad juju.

Anyways - the 'ol claims of top speed are just that - claims - until measured. And not with another car - what does that prove? The only fact from that scenario is that one will be faster. By how fast it passes - another shot in the dark.
I'll change it then: I don't tell you about your car. Are you done with semantics? I guess I'm still confused. Are you calling me a liar or aren't you? Based on gearing, I can't be too far from the indicated speed. Are you saying my speedometr is off by almost 20mph? Are you also saying I can't tell the difference between 5mph and 20mph? You seem very amiable so I'll keep it civil. But this is almost insulting my intelligence.

"Or ask the Mustang GT I topped out with who passed me by about five miles per hour. What's their top speed? 145 or so...?"
Car& Driver clocks the new GT at 138 MPH.
And those speedos can be WAY off (have seen a write up on this with the Viper being >20MPH off at 120 HPH and >30 MPH off at 170MPH.).
This really is a stat best gleaned from the mags. You must (like the major mags) have calibrated equipment, a long/level road, and 2-way runs to factor out wind. Cars typically go a few MPH faster when broken in so this can contribute to minor variability as can car to car variation. But the test driver can't really alter the results. Modified cars - who knows but above 130MPH it takes a good HP boost (or better yet, a drag reduction - the opposite of what people usually do with big tires and big wings) to add just a few MPH. At 150-160MPH it takes even more and here you see alot of pretty powerful iron top out. Car has to be real slippery & strong above 160.

i was in a hurry.
i rarely hit 3 digits so when i looked down and saw 110, i thought "i have to go further". that little engine had more room left too.

FYI - Stock stats for a 1999 Civic Si redline: 8000 rpm 5th gear ratio: 0.848 final ratio: 4.400 Tires: 195/55R-15 All this adds up to a theoretical top speed of about 149.5 mph. I have assume you have the stock gear set, but this would obviously increase if you have larger diameter tires and a higher redline from a chip or something. I just grabbed these stats off of some website, so correct me if they're wrong.

I think they're right. I have stock gearing and 50-series tires. When I ran that fast, I was almost at the stock redline. I haven't tried to nine grand, yet.

Top Speed to me means the best speed a vehicle can attain on a flat with the average of the maximum speed available in opposite directions. Same way they test 'em on the salt flats. Sure, you may hit a high number once on a slight grade, with a bit of a wind, but of what use is that number as a measure of top speed? That is better relegated to the "fastest I have ever had my car going" - but is not necessarily the vehicle's top speed. Infurym - I am not calling you a liar - I believe you either saw that indicated speed or have attained it on occasion. But I do not believe your car could attain it according to the conditions mentioned by Dan Nixon or the testing procedures of Car and Driver (same thing). But hey - don't worry about trying to prove it on my account - it's not worth the time or the money.

Sometimes, I'd say it's worth the time. And I wouldn't be proving it to prove you wrong. Let's say... to prove me right. I'll see what I can do about a radar gun. I'm sure I can find one somewhere. Maybe I can get a cop to give me a ticket for going that fast. Then I'd have REAL proof. I don't see how the speeds I've reached are anywhere close to 127mph. If the SVT goes considerably faster, I'll find one of 'em to run me on the George Bush Tollway. Plenty of lanes and flat road on a Sunday afternoon.
