Well, since you mentioned that the SHO guys are 'messing with this find', I figured you could get one of them to come up with the patent number.

I--along with others here--would probably be interested in reading it...

Brinn, I am digging up info about the Yamaha patent. I have also found some nice pictures of the Lincoln LS 3L Duratec that also appears to take advantage of this technology. Here are two pics of the butterfly valve in the passage between the two banks of intake runners:

When I head home from work, later today, I will be popping the hood to see where a equalizing tube can be placed. the butterfly valve might be actuated much later in the development. Maybe in conjunction with the secondaries? Intriguing!

Yeah, would be cool to close the valve at the same time secondaries open up...

Thanks, on the patent search...

My curiosity is roused.

Great news! There are two freeze plugs at the end of those runners so they can be popped out and then have holes to work with. They look to be about 1.5" in diameter. Minimal drilling, if any, will be required. As for the space to place the pipe, the plug wires are in the way, so they might need to be rerouted or the pipe will have to find a way around them.

As far as the patent, I will be posting my findings soon. I have found a lot of stuff concerning the SHO intake manifold. Just need to weed through it. Very interesting stuff!

Well, the patent search is turning up little information. At least on the US side. I don't klnow where to check out Japanese patents. So far the automotive stuffI have seen from Yamaha is pretty neat. They even have a patent on an intake system where the runners slide in and out to make them longer and shorter. Like a slide whistle. I will continue to look though.

Check out http://www.patentinfo.com/

Great stuff!! You need to download a Tiff viewing plug-in to see any images.

In other news, the freeze plug finding is going to make things much easier. It should be easily undone if it doesn't work.

Anybody with their intake already off that wants to mess with this? I might mess with it next week sometime. From what I am seeing and guessing on the SHO, LS, and Jag engines, there just needs to be a passage between the banks. Nothing special on the hole or passage diameter.

Chris-

I went to that patent site and downloaded the TIFF plug-in. Like much free software, it's worthless, and does not allow viewing of the TIFF images as promised. I even downloaded and tried to install the MS patch, and it said that I didn't need it on my machine.

Anyway, I am looking for pics of this patent:

Will anyone who can view these images post them or send me a pic? thanks!

Chris,

I passed your note along to my brother (ex-SHO owner and currently an intake manifold designer for *******). Coincidentally, he talked to me just this weekend about the same thing. I emailed him and will ask him to give you a little more info...

You need to restart the computer and the web browser several times to get it to work. Also, make sure you have only one web browser using the plugin. It was a massive pain for me to get it to work as well. Once it does work, you will see a goldmine of info at this site. I'll look at that pat when I get to work.

Porstar*--- That would be great to point your brother to this thread. I am thinking the Porsche and Yamaha engineers where working on the Duratec and SHO motors at the same time. That's why the Porsche intake doesn't incorporate the passage. The newer Ford based products use this in the name of "performance."

We shall see.
