In speaking with our Taurus SHO bretheren over the weekend, a few ideas came up for performace mods. One thing that was brought to light was the rear intake equalizer that the SHO intakes have. For those that need a visual I have provided a pic. In discussing the purpose of this channel, I had remembered that the Jag X-type (3L Duratec) also has this kind of passage between runners that also has a butterfly valve. It turns out that if this passage is plugged, the SHO engine loses quite a bit of power at most RPM's except for around 3800. At that point it gains power. One of the SHO guys said that he dug up the original patent for the Yamaha engine and it contains a butterfly valve to change the intake shape/volume. The SHO guys are messing with this find. On the Contour's Duratec design, the Porsche engineers did not incorporate this into their design. What I am proposing, is this: What if 1.25" holes where drilled and tapped at the end of the larger intake sections, near the FEAD, and a crossover pipe was placed there. Could this prove some gains? Just have a nice aluminum pipe, 1.25" in diameter, bent at the ends to 90 degrees, then mated to two brass nippled that are mounted on the ends of those intake channels. Just an idea. Comments welcome. ------------------ Chris Hightower CEG Mod-SquadCEG Keychainer Contour WebChat 98.5 Contour GL Sport Some mods... More to come. Hopefully Terry will come out of hiding and answer that question.

Its possible that doing so might help, VW has something similar with their VR6 engine.
But I think its going to take alot of tuning and calibration to get the right shape, size and volume to yeild the best results. Is anyone here is into fluid dynamics?

This is a long shot... but I know a guy that did some R&D on the Lincoln LS-8 intake manifolds (non-ford employee worked in an engineering house)
That guy is now a test driver for Bosch Brakes (likes driving more than number crunching)
I can try to get up with him to see what his thoughts are....

I don't know but it is fomr the Yamaha motor Company. One of the Taurus SHO guys told me about it during SZ. He had a blue second gen SHO with a very nicely painted blue intake.

Guys, I can't answer your question about how beneficial that extra crossover tube would be to a Duratec. However, I suggest that you take a look at this link for some great technical information on the Probe GT's KL V6 variable intake resonance system. http://www.highlandsun.com/hyc/sae920677/ Adding a tube as described by Chris Hightower might work but there is clearly a lot of fluid dynamics to understand and fool around with to get good results. At best, just adding a tube would be a shot in the dark. There are whole groups of engineers at Ford devoted to analyzing this kind of quandry. -Kurt

I'll ask a few people I know and see what I can find.
It's all about balance.
