If gas prices were 25% lower, say $1.50gallon vs $2.00, how much per month does that really impact most people? If you drive the national average of 1300 miles per week and get 25mpg (typical Contour), that is 52 gallons at $78 per month vs. $104. As a percentage of most people's income, $26/mo realy isn't that much.

For the most of this past winter, I was driving my wife's F-150 as my dailiy driver. I averaged 500 miles per week at about 11.5mpg. Between my wife and myself, our fuel usage was about $425/mo. If the gas price drops by 25$, I save $100/mo, but that is a rather small portion of our income. I save a lot more refinancing my home mortgage than $100.

Considering I'd have to work another five hours a week to recoup that $26, it's a lot to me. Maybe I won't care when I'm out of college and have a real job, but right now it matters. I will be pulling my chip once I'm done with this tank of gas and I think I'm even gonna put the 14" steelies back on. Every bit helps.
