Looking at a Mazda 3 sport GT and im usure weather to go 5 spd or auto
I do alot of hwy driving so the 5spd would save fuel, but the cost of clutch plates seems rather pricy, how often do you need to replace those suckers?

Had a 626 that took its first clutch @ 200000km's. This was 10000 km's after We bought the car and my GF and I both learned how to drive 5 Speed on it. The car was also 14 years old at the time. However it depends from car to car and how well the previous owners cared for their clutches. Still I wouldn't at this juncture buy anything but a 5 speed. Still prefer to feel like I am doing something behind the wheel.

Normal putzing around town/highway driving ... there is no reason why a clutch/flywheel combo shouldn't last 80K+ miles without incident. However, if you beat up on the car, expect about 50K-60K miles between resurfacing and new clutch surface required.

hmm
save 1000$ not and get 5 spd or spend 1000 now for sport mode auto and save lots later
5spd still seems like fun, except in the evening traffic jams... lol

I have a mechanical link in the 95 SE and I still prefer it to ATX in my 99 SE. I would go standard, you won't go back.

If you can drive a stick at all, you should have no problems with wear. My SVT has 144K on the original cluytch (although I am not the original owner)

Practice young daniel-son. Practice. You'll get it right eventually, and then you won't be looking back in 6 months saying "wtf, why the heck did I buy this stupid ATX, my car SUCKS!". Instead you'll be like, "wee."

Yeah I hate my auto now
but it is nice in the stop and go crap, but 95% of my driving is to work and home, all highway, 3 stops, 3 turns
so stick should svae decent fuel for me
traffic jams have me a little worried but if i can get used to the clutch thing then it wont be bad
