Initially, I felt the photos would be bad for us in Arab eyes. Clearly, big problems existed in the military leadership/supervision and the perps were clearly sadistic.

Though I wish the incident had not occured, as I think more about it I am not so sure this is big damage for us. We do/did not have a "sqeeky clean image" in the middle east to begin with....because of past involvement with Sadam & Bin Laden in earlier years, meddling in Isreal/Palestinian affairs + years of one sided brainwashing by Arab media we already looked pretty BAD going in. On the other hand....As a result of our overwhelming force and not backing down (like the UN & Spain for example) when face to face, I think they have a new found respect (read fear if you like) for our ruthlessness, "visciousness" and tenacity. Keep in mind, torture is not something new in the middle east but rather buisiness as usual. There sensitivities are not so delicate. We of course do generally not percieve ourselves as capable of the cruealty and malace docummented in the photos but it does reinforce the image to those that already hate us.

These folks do seem to respect ruthless and crualty...nobody was lining up to cause Sadam any trouble yet he was hated. Being hated does not mean you get attacked...if potential attackers are afraid of the consequences. In the past we were seen as evil cowards, now more like evil and ruthless aggressors. Not people to be messed with..

It will of course give arab nations a venue to protest, and will of course reinforce Kofi Anans & France's senses of moral superiority. But probably not a big impact otherwise.

The other point is that actions are respected more than words especially in the middle east. Iraqis, while still greatful for our removing Sadam, are increasing against us because they percieve that we will not leave. But we clearly will (and it is critical that it is percieved to be on our terms). When we DO leave, I predict much of that anti-US sentiment will fade, when it becomes clear that we were not interested in occupation or stealing oil or turning everyone into a Christian.

I do agree with that perspective

and my case is proven yet once again..

idiot.. bush.. it's true.. only an idiot can sound like that..

I'm sorry JVT.. your so tough with your USELESS or lack of intelligent arguments.. PER YOUR OWN admission you dont know much about the goings on in the world other than what people tell you. All you can do is insult people without providing any valid or intelligent points related to the subject at hand.

All you know is what people tell you...all I know is what people tell me... its the way of the world.

The difference is, that JVT, and I, and the majority of people, listen to what we are told, evaluate it, compare it with differing opinions, and then form an opinion that is entirely our own. You seem to listen to what you are told, then take it as truth with no afterthought.

I do not like the politics of John Kerry, I don't particularly respect him, nor do I think he would be a good president. But that's FAR different from running around and saying "Bush? Idiot. Why? Because he's not a good speaker". You're not a good typer, which leads me to believe that you're an idiot, but yet you refute that... why should I believe you when the evidence speaks for itself as it apparently does so obviously in Bush's case?

ROFLMFAO! Todras you're the best!

There's so much stupidity being aired on this post that I am just going to sit back and read. Waaaaaay to entertaining!

One thing is apparent though...people are naive and believe any hype and propaganda they see on the news.

Back our troops, and keep your tree-hugging sh!t at home!

(Being pissed on is a far better punishment compared to being thrown feet first into a shredder or gang-raped, IMHO)

why, because I disagree with your views sometimes.. does that automatically make me listen to what other people tell me..? If that was the case.. I would be listening to you with all your slanderous remarks..

It's funny how our political threads digress into bipartisan name calling. . .so THAT ASIDE,

The pictures are a NECESSARY evil, it's part of the war, and even though i wasn't for the war to begin with (I supported the Afghan war, not the iraq one), if I WERE THERE, 6000+miles away from home, fighting insane Muslims and deranged Camel spiders, I'd do the same. . .I'd take pictures and pleasure out of my captives misery. . .and it's not like they didn't torture our POWS, Jessica Lynch, etc. . .

Certainly not me... whats so "idiotic" about my opinion? He has done nothing to earn my respect. I certainly respect his military service in Vietnam. Thanks John. Now as for the rest of his career? What has he done that I should respect? He is the epitome of all that I loathe... politicians in power for the sake of power. He's your archetypal bureaucrat... votes for whatever's popular at the time so that he can keep and increase his own personal power. This is evidenced by his shaky voting history, repeatedly waffling on many important issues, and the fact that, at least from what i've seen so far, he has yet to take a decisive stance on anything. He spouts all kind of "We've been BUSHWHACKED!!" bs, talks about how the world will be a better place, but how?? By repealing tax cuts? That has ZERO positive impact on my life. I don't like John Kerry, I don't like his policies, and i don't respect his political career.

more like not conforming to the majority might be the only reason you've been railed.

WRONG. The only times I've been railed is when I did not speak from experience, or have adequate factual information to back my arguments/statements and/or point of view. My assertions were therefore fundamentally flawed & I was offered appropriate evidence to the contrary.

This has been the fundamental premise of my more recent posts. Don't just toss an opinion out unless you've thought it through. Just regurgitating the mainstream media hype and/or the slant of the left or right does not cut it with me.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
