Thinkmoto,
I understand the common sense of buying a used car to get past the depreciation on new cars. I've found that searching for the right used car takes too much time, especially when one tries to find a stick shift version that hasn't been smoked-in. Then, you have to consider whether the car was properly maintained and if it was in a minor accident that went unreported (won't find that via CarFax). I work enough hours such that convenience of buying new at a higher price is worth it as long as relatively cheaper new cars are the target. I try to drive all my cars till they drop so that compensates for the higher purchase price to a certain extent. I'd drive the Contour into the ground if price of gas doesn't get much higher (I think we haven't seen anything yet in gas prices).
Concerning hybrids, you are correct that the difference between getting the most fuel efficient standard gas car vs. a hybrid is not cost effective on fuel savings unless the car is owned for an incredibly long time. This is more of a moral value; why shouldn't I strive for the highest fuel economy if I can do so. Fossil fuel is a fixed quantity resource that is running out. I can't do much about how others abuse the natural resources but I can do what I feel is the best possible within my means (not a tree-hugger, just behaving responsibly).
Honda del Sols are nice little cars but a two-seater is impractical for my needs. A 4-door sedan with fold-down seats or a station wagon is what I need.

"If you can't handle the "high" gas prices...walk." ThinkMoto
"Japanese cars are more efficient". Honda, Toyota, and Nissan are building lots of big trucks/minivans/SUV's these days, so they certainly have to worry too. Hybrids are only 1% of their sales. People "assume" that ALL Asian cars are tiny hybrids or 40 mpg sippers. Check the mpg ratings of an Accord/Camry/Maxima/Lexus lately? GM and Ford make compact and midsize cars that sometimes get better mileage. 50% of Lexus sales are the SUV's, they certainly are no "efficiency angels".
"Detroit was unprepared". When you have customers buying big vehicles in huge numbers, and overnight OPEC raised prices, who knew? Ford sells 30 mpg Focuses and GM has small cars, too. It's far from 1973.
People cry over gas prices, but then glady shell out more and more money for cell phones, home electronics, SUV's, big houses, prescription drugs, food.....

[censored] i care too. i need a tank of gas every week and it right now cost like 38 bux a full tank in the wrx. thats 160 every month and its a pain in the arse. im trying to save up for a utec. and tune the car so it just sips fuel. and run only 7 psi at most.
Experience is the worst teacher; it gives the test before presenting the lesson.

Damn.... gas went up, that BP is now $2.06 for Regular... and here in Cook County, it was about $2.12 for gasoline, just some helpful tips for those around the Schaumburg/Hanover Park/Roselle area, now I dont regret the 1.92 purchase...
We should keep an eye out for cheapest stations out in Chicagoland area

Up on North Ave. and 5th over by Triton there is a gas station, not the BP the other, they say they will have the lowest prices in 2 miles. I have always gone there, they have been the cheapest.
