"If you can't handle the "high" gas prices...walk." ThinkMoto
"Japanese cars are more efficient".

Honda, Toyota, and Nissan are building lots of big trucks/minivans/SUV's these days, so they certainly have to worry too. Hybrids are only 1% of their sales. People "assume" that ALL Asian cars are tiny hybrids or 40 mpg sippers. Check the mpg ratings of an Accord/Camry/Maxima/Lexus lately? GM and Ford make compact and midsize cars that sometimes get better mileage. 50% of Lexus sales are the SUV's, they certainly are no "efficiency angels".
"Detroit was unprepared". When you have customers buying big vehicles in huge numbers, and overnight OPEC raised prices, who knew? Ford sells 30 mpg Focuses and GM has small cars, too. It's far from 1973.
People cry over gas prices, but then glady shell out more and more money for cell phones, home electronics,

SUV's, big houses, prescription drugs, food.....
