So the Check Engine goes off for the first time yesterday [85,000 car]. I drive to Autozone and get a P0402 code reading [for free by the way - God Bless those folks!]. Well, they tell me that it's probably the fuel and that sounds reasonable - I just filled up a day before [crappy USA gas fuel] and the next morning the light goes off. Apparently the old fuel & USA gas fuel didn't mix well Anyway, I get a $3 bottle of fuel additive and erase the code. The car is running 100% as normal - no noises etc... Is there anything else I should do??? I searched the message board and some people 'clean the throttle body and egr passages.' I'm a newbie, so WHERE exactly are those located and HOW to clean them? Any other tips? Thanks

Here's how you clean the EGR. I thought that Autozone no longer pulled codes in California ???

Apparently they still do BUT their policy is not to 'touch' your car, you have to plug in and do the whole process yourself [they do show you how to though]. Thanx for the link.

Another question... How would I go about buying a 'New TB gasket (Ford part #F5RZ-9E936-A)(Cost: $2.00-7.00) '? I doubt they'll have this specific part @ Kragen so do I have to go to the dealer to get it?

Advance auto have them but you will probably have to special order it. $2 + change IIRC. They might tell you they dont supply them but they DO. If you search on their website, it's listed under misc. gaskets.
Good luck.

P0402 does not indicate a need for TB cleaning, that is a P0401.
Here is the first step of the P0402 diagnostic:
"Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0402 indicates that Self-Test has detected EGR flow at idle.
NOTE: If DTC P1405 is in continuous memory, diagnose that first starting with HE50.
Possible causes:
-- EGR valve stuck open.
-- EGR vacuum regulator solenoid vent plugged or iced.
-- EGRVR circuit shorted to GND.
-- EGRVR circuit shorted to VREF.
-- Improper vacuum hose connection.
-- Plugged/pinched EGR vacuum regulator Solenoid vacuum hose.
-- Plugged EGR tube.
-- Damaged EGR vacuum regulator solenoid.
-- Pinched/iced pressure hoses.
-- Damaged differential pressure feedback EGR (D.P.F. EGR) sensor.
-- Damaged PCM.
l Disconnect vacuum hose at EGR valve and plug hose.
l Run Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.
l Key off.
l Was KOER DTC P0402 output or unable to run KOER Self-Test due to engine stall or no start?
Yes There is possible EGR flow at idle. INSPECT pressure hoses first for pinching and icing. If OK, REMOVE and INSPECT the EGR valve and EGR tube for signs of contamination, unusual wear, carbon deposits, binding and other damage. REPAIR as necessary. RESTORE vehicle. COMPLETE PCM Reset to clear DTCs. RERUN «Quick Test».
No RECONNECT vacuum hose to EGR valve. GO to «HE21»."
My initial guess of the most likely faults would be either an EGR valve that is not fully closing or is leaking or you have a faulty DPFE sensor.

My CEL went out this morning. Reason: Filled the fuel tank with mid-grade fuel instead of Premium. This light has been on for about 6 months.

Since you don't know why the CEL was on, the gasoline gets the credit? It is impossible for the octane rating of the fuel to affect something like this.
Perhaps your gas cap just wasn't tightened.
Go have the codes scanned and write them down. They are saved in the computer for a period of time.

You guys are lucky to have Autozone...one Fraud dealer wants to charge an hour to read the CEL ($100+ taxes) but "luckily" I found another Ford dealer that will only charge me 1/2 hour labour to read the CEL.
