The part of the sensor in the tank that floats may not be floating. I had this happen to several tanks, all confirmed by turning the empty tank upside down and watching the light turn off. I got tired of paying for a new tank when this would happen so I unplugged the sensor and put a jumper/bypass wire in the plug. No more problem, although I do have to visually check the fluid level.
