The inherant flaw is in one component - the IAC valve. The folks who built the component were obviously concerned about the specified application for the unit, to control idle. Air bleeding through during driving conditions was an issue they were likely not concerned with, and perhaps never even considered, so we get TH.

I have a 1986 BMW 325e with a similar issue. BMW set up a dedicated electronic idle control module to deal with the problem. The EICM was prone to failure and the idle would surge & fall wildly in those bimmers. A fix nearly identical to the Contour TH fix has been in use for the BMWs for a few decades with no known side effects, and is a lot less expensive than a new EICM unit. The TH fix has been in my BMW for about 7 years now.

Use the TH fix, & learn to love it.
