Well as far as getting a solid rectangle to light up evenly, EL foil is all i can think of right now.
And the stuff is fairly bright, have you ever seen indiglo guages at night? They can get pretty bright.
If you cut the shape that you want then mount it directly on the lense it would probably give the ligting pattern you want.
But in the end i don't know jack really cuz i've never popped open one of the tails, its something i've wanted to do for a while, just need time and money.
