Bad advice on my part at the top, then.
Actually the pickup is centered in the middle of the pan. (That circular spot on the bottom on the pan)
However you need to remember the engine is in there sideways.
So the oil does not move to the left or right of the pan but to the front or rear of the pan (respectively) in hard cornering.
There just is more room the to "rear" (right hand turn) of the pan to push the oil to and therefore easier to starve the pickup.
That is a big reason why the pan was revised 3-4 times!
Also Remember the 3L has the extra, straight into the pan, head drains. That's another problem that was fixed in the 3L Duratec design.
