If you've got the means and the motivation, anything is possible. Cheaply, I suggest avoiding the thought of importing a car...regardless of whether or not you could drive it over the border. I also don't know what kind of barriers there are between Mexico and the US. I know its possible and has been done between Japan, Europe and here on an individual basis. I know I'd love to skip across the pond and pick up a LHD mondeo.

Really??? Modeos in Mexico?? I live like 1.5hrs away from the border. I wish I could get one. I dont think its difficult to purchase a car there and bringing it here. Just drive it over with proper paperwork. Ive seen lots of US cars that Mexican owners have that arent supposed to be there in Mexico.

You can take US cars to Mexico for nothing.
Mexico cars into the US require many thousands of dollars of emissions work in order to be able to register them in the US.

Is it emissions work only? What about impact safety, i.e.: bumpers, airbags, etc (airbags are probably pretty standard though)???...interesting

Impact safety is probably relatively standard, as the Mondeo is produced in Europe and most safety equipment is integral into the platform and the costs to have 2 platforms would offset any cost-savings of not having those features in Mexico.
Besides, there are no US laws on how safe your car must be in order to import it into the US. The requirements are only upheld to automobiles sold within the US.
DOT Lighting Regulations might give you some hassles, as well.
More than anything insurance would be a [censored]. You couldn't insure the vehicle, only the value of the vehicle, which is an expensive proposition. On top of that you'd have to do all the work on the car yourself and pray there's no recalls, as no Ford dealer stateside will be able to work on it.

I don't know about not having my local dealership work on the car it would not that hard for them to get parts. for that matter I could get the parts and have my other wrench turner work on it I've picked up parts in Mexico before on trips down there (1.5 hour drive away) for a good taco dinner. some parts are alot cheaper for my F150 down there.

This is not true.

SAFETY, BUMPER, AND THEFT PREVENTION STANDARDS
Importers of motor vehicles must file form HS-7 at the time of vehicle is imported to declare whether the vehicle complies with DOT requirements. As a general rule, motor vehicles less than 25 years old must comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) in order to be imported permanently into the United States. Vehicles manufactured after September 1, 1978, must also meet the bumper standard, and vehicles beginning with model year 1987 must meet the theft-prevention standard.
Edit: this should be in an FAQ somewhere since its comes up several times per year. Not that anyone would read it anyway

I stand corrected. Although I'm sure that those standards are rather easily met by any automobiles produced today, in Mexico or otherwise.
