Okay this wasn't a contour problem but... I had just had my then new 00' Explorer for six months. I had just got into Wilmington North Carolina on my way to Myrtle Beach in mid-march for spring break. I had just drove 10 hours myself and I had stopped for breakfast to change into nice clothes to enjoy the nice 75 degree weather. NIcely redressed in sunny warm weather with a full stomach, I'm ready to drive off down the coast to enjoy my vacation. 1st stop light out the driveway of a Checkers, I am stopped. My friend opens my sunroof and the car turns off. OMG like WTF!!!

condensed story...towed POS goes to Cape Fear Ford. 4 days later wasted vacation...problem = faulty gem in the PCM per dealer. Rap up off to Florida for 2nd leg of trip. In Clearwater...deja vu hits. Again driving down the beach road only car turns off while driving 25. Off to be towed: Part 2. Problem: Dealer one used spare part...didnt work. Replaced part. Go home...4 months later. The Explorer unexplainably doesn't shift past 2nd gear in an AUTOMATIC 4-speed. The engine sounds like its a weedwacker and jerks around like an inexperienced person driving a manual. Problem dissipates and reappears. Off to dealer again...fixed. Turn in lease.....new car. Read newspaper...FORD EXPLORER RECALL...PCM module blablabla. Sometimes its your sh*tty luck when you buy a Ford.

Oh, and check your battery connections too. If one gets loose, weird (wierd?) things will happen.
I'm going to bed now. No more adult beverages for me!

Hehe, funny thing is I just got it back today. Turns out, the alternator wasent like, hooked up.... so it was all running off battery juice. Hehe, ah well

Everyone thinks my SVT is one of them there "new Escort's". What went wrong you ask? Those people were born, that's what went wrong!

Other than that, no good problem stories... yet.

yep...me too...nobody knows what my car is, let alone what it can do.

Really dumb story but it has to be told. One of the first days of having my car, I drove it home from school, with my tape player(no CD player yet) blasting till me ears hurt. I just got into the 55 mph zone and went about 2 miles, I then glanced down at my RPM gauge, 5000 rpms. Holy Mother Theresa! Lay off the gas, put on the brakes, and the car shakes to a stop. I put the car in park and then back in drive. Everything works fine. The problem? When putting my car in drive back at the school I had the button on the shifter held down and instead of going in drive, it went inbetween drive and second. Do I basically drove my car half way home in second gear. Ah, those were the days.

My daughter has 1998 COntour LX Sports Sedan. Wheneve it rains, the headlights come on, and there is nothing you can do inside the car thaat will turn them off. This even happens when the car has been sitting in the driveway, turned off, locked up, unoccupied. It rains, and BINGO the lights come on.
Many times we have left home for a few days and left the car in the driveway. It rains while we are gone, and when we get home battery is completely dead. You connect the charger to it, and the lights are still on! The ONLY way you can turn them off is to pop the hood, open the fuse box, and pull the relay that activatess the lights. Leave it out for a few minutes, then plug it back in. Then the lights are off.
When it is not raining they function like they are supposed to.
My wife was talking with a co-worker about this, and he has an identical model. It happens to his car also, even when it is inside the garage!
The dealership says they never heard of this before! My daughter thinks the car is obsessed and has nicknamed it
"Christine".

Mine has the problem where if you turn the car off with the wipers running, it won't crank next time you try to start it. Turn the key and nothing, no click or anything.

If you then turn the key off, turn the wipers off, and then try to start it again, it starts fine.
