Take a peek at & perhaps test drive a few other cars that have LOWER stickers on them. They'll want to get you into the more expensive car to maximize their cash flow & may be willing to give you that extra discount that's been discussed.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Ill go and look at it and drive it, I'd probably go $7000 plus tax. There is a Miata that I want to see, but isnt available to show until this weekened. I guess I could just wait it out if I like the car and hope no one else beats me to it?
Don't wait. You'd kick yourself (and me :P ) later.
There's two things you could try.
You could shoot low and spend time looking around the $5000-6000 cars. Test-drive an old Grand Prix or something. Then say it just didn't "feel" right, and walk over to that SVT and ask if you can drive that one. Then he'll know that your price-point is a little lower. Try not to explicitly state a price-point -- he will try to get you to name one. Let him assume one based on what you're looking at.
Or you could start off meandering around but focus on the SVT and pretend to not like the price then go focus on some other $6,000 cars. After a little bit of looking around looking unsatisfied, tell him you want that SVT but you need to find some middle ground between the $6000 cars and the SVT. Again, your not stating a price-point, when you walk away from that Contour you're letting him assume that the $7,800 car you were looking at was too much for you, but the $6,000 aren't good enough and he'll be afraid that you'll walk off buying nothing if he doesn't meet up.
I think you could definitely get $7,000+tax. $6700 is pushing it, as the dealer probably paid at or above $6,000 for it as a trade.
He wants you in that more expensive car, but not at the expense of profit margin. If he knows he can get twice as much profit next week on it, he'll keep it.
One more tip, if you've got something other than the Lightning, drive that. If the salesman knows his cars, and he sees you driving up in an SVT Lightning, he'll know that you know the value of the SVT Contour and it's what you came for.

Go test drive the car. Don't even talk with the salesman about the price (although he'll push you like crazy). Make any nutty excuses you like (gotta check that my pet fish likes the color and such). Bring in a cashiers check the next day in the $7,250 range and tell you'll take the car out the door for the check. If they don't, walk (and don't hesitate), but leave your number. They'll usually call within a day or two saying they'll do the deal. The salesman just wants to suck every last penny they can get out of you, and they'll usually try anything in the book to do so. BTW, no offense to car salesmen!

Well I did it!!! I am now an CSVT owner (well I dont have it yet). I went in to look at it, but kept reffering to its as "the contour", not mentioning SVT. I also inquired on a ZX5 Focus they had as well. After checking it out, we went for a test drive (I still didnt really answer on my price range). We got back and started the haggling process. They started at sticker plus "fees", or $8495. I said no way. We went back and forth until they said the old line "what do we have to do to get you to buy this car?" I told them $7000 out the door and we have a deal. They came back with 7700, I said no. They baulked, but came back with $7400 OTD, I said no $7000. After about another 35 minutes we settled on $7200 OUT THE DOOR! Keep in mind this is a chevy dealer and they really didnt know what they had. I had them run a carfax, it's clean, no accidents, only 1 owner (purchased at the Ford dealer across the street). So I think I did well, that works out to about $6650 for the car. So this car (payment and ins) will cost me less than the gas for my Lightning. The car is a 98.5 E1, silver with only 58000 miles. No spoiler, new tires, mechanically inspected, 3mo / 1500 mile warranty. All original, no mods. The car is straight, no dents or dings, shiny paint. Nice leather, no dash problems, everything works. Im pretty excited. So how hard, how long does it take to do the water pump? How much is the part and what is the part number?

Sweet Deal. Congrats, man!
I would definitely continue taking it to the dealer across the street that I would assume performed most of the service on it if it was bought there. They might even be able to answer the water-pump question.
